Slumdog Millionaire

When this movie started buzzing after taking the golden globe for best picture, I tried to see it twice, and it was the third time when I was finally able to get a ticket. All the other times the movie was sold out. What is worth the buzz? Read further and find out!

Slumdog Millionaire is a note worthy film of all levels. There are not a lot of films out there were it effects not just a certain class or a certain group of film viewers. People who have grown up not aware of the horrible poverty in the world around us, to those who have grown up in the slums of 3rd world country will get a wonderful message from this movie.

When you see that the movie is based around the show “Who wants to be a millionaire”, you think how can this movie be exciting???? How can this movie be as great as everyone says? I can only imagine what will happen…well, you are so far off, that the game show “Who wants to be a millionaire,” is only the setup backdrop of this romance story of Jamal Malik growing up in the slums with his brother Salim (who is t he darker brother of the two) and Latika who was the lost girl in the streets who the brothers adopted into there small family. They called themselves the “3 musketeers” as they went throughout there lives journeys.

The soundtrack for this film was really well done. The score and the music really was the icing on the cake.

What worked for me personally this film is that I have lived in similar environments that this movie took place in. How the story was told, showed the realism and dramatic way of survival, and how powerful love can be. I asked some other viewers what there thoughts were on a film, and they said there eyes were open to how it is in another country. So for them the comment was made “I thought we had it bad in our country, and we have serious struggles, but after seeing this, my problems are nothing like what it would be growing up in the slums of India or another country were poverty is prominent.”

Danny Boyle who directed this film did an excellent job. He did a Tony Scott type directing, like the films “Man on Fire” and “Domino.” How Boyle directed this really was efficient not only expressing and making bold the points he wanted to make, but also teaches us that winning a ton of money wasn’t the point of the story, or our purpose in life in fact when I finished watching this, the outcome could have been different of the game (which was intense in its right mind) and this movie still would’ve been one of the best this year.

The one con I have on this film would be the rating. My personal views on the rating will have to be a separate article because I think that the rating bureau should be abolished. There is no reason for the rated “R.” This is a film that should be shown in schools, because I think youth can be educated by this film.

I can understand why this film is nominated for Best Picture. It is definitely in my top 10 movies this year, and will be fun to see again and again.

If you liked this film, I recommend:

City of God
Good Will Hunting
Oliver Twist
