Shooter

Shooter has the rights to be placed with the 70’s & 80’s action films like Commando with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Delta Force with Chuck Norris. It has been a while since we have seen a classic bronze showing film that its intentions are to pull of a predicable plot with a lot of gun shooting, and explosions.
I know that this movie has either raves or rants, however for me it was entertaining but so cheesy that after the film was done, I felt like less and less appreciative of this film and probably never see it again. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Mark Walberg playing “Bobby Lee Swagger.” Walberg has really proved himself as an actor since the movie “The Departed,” but this movie was to show he had the bronze like Jean-Claude Van Damme, (expect an ass whooping would be done on Mark between the two, unless guns were involved).
The whole movie is based off the government framing Swagger as a the “shooter”(what an original title) to try to assassinate the President...when they were really knocking off another. However he gets away and he gets the 1 FBI agent who believes him in a 2 second conversation while he gets a beat down from Swagger character to go the EXTREME to prove that Walberg’s innocence. The whole movie made the government looks like they couldn’t catch a cold. So there was no thrill or suspense at all. It was full of action, a couple of laughs...yeah…
The whole story was a little silly for me. To watch a veteran who comes home three years after coming back from a mission that he was “left behind,” and goes to live in the mountains with his pooch while conspiracy is being built against the Government, and then having that change of heart so quick only to have it happen again... I mean, come on McFly what were you thinking? You should have shown that he still had some allegiance or adding an extra scene to show he actually gives a rats ass about America.
One of the biggest annoyances of this film was the SLOW MOTION effect. I was waiting to see someone yell “NOOOOOO” in a slow low pitch voice, and thank you Jeeves that didn’t happen. I mean come on! Let me blow up a house, and have it in slow motion while Walberg walks away without looking back looking like a bad ass. For me it works a couple of times in a film, but after the 12th time, I thought it got redundant.
Danny Glover comes back as yet another villain role. I had high hopes, especially being the Prick he plays in The Color Purple, and a great villainous role in Witness, but I felt he lacked the intensity. He came with a lisp that drove me nuts. Did he just get dental work or what was that all about???
Okay, there were some good things about this film as well. First off Walberg, was fun for the part. He plays a good Fire Ant that lives as an angry rogue. The second thing was how they portrayed a sniper. It was fun to see how he played the tactics, knew every move, and yet was able to overcome the United States Arms Forces.
It is one of those movies, if you are going to kick back, with a group of friends for a couple of laughs and enjoy some good action sequences, than this is for you! Please realize that our Government is a whole lot smarter than this movie depicts us. If I served in the Armed Services, I would actually be disgraced, that a Sniper can kick my who platoon. So don’t waste your pennies. You should be able to pick it up at Walmart in the next year of two for $5.
If you like this film I recommend:
Clear and Present Danger
Fugitive
The Bourne Trilogy
