Random News of the Week (August 11 - August 17, 2008)
George Lucas talked about a 5th INDIANA JONES film this week and it looks like he's heard the fan's for once. Shia Lebouf's character "Mutt" may go the way of "Short Round" and never be seen or heard or discussed again. He said, "Indiana Jones is Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones. If it was Mutt Williams it would be ‘Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis’ or something.” I'm not sure why George is suddenly bashing the character HE helped create? I actually didn't hate Mutt as much as everyone else did. I thought he was more interesting than most of the rest of the script.
A CANDYMAN remake is in the works about the mysterious figure that appears when you stare into a mirror and say his name 5 times. The only problem is, you lose your life. Word is that it will be a more true to adaptation to the Clive Barker story.
Looks like JUSTICE LEAGUE is back on track. After the success of DARK KNIGHT, we are going to see every comic property under the sun adapted and greenlit as Hollywood beats the comic book film dead horse. George Miller is still in charge and shooting starts in Australia next year.
The X-FILES movie "bombed" so badly. It was a complete disaster but since it didn't cost much to make, it wasn't a huge loss in the studio scheme of things. When producer Frank Spotnitz was asked if there will be more X-FILES, he said "I've always said I thought The X-Files could go on forever, provided there was an audience that wanted to see those stories. We'll see." Clear as mud. Basically, if I had to guess, I'd say it's over.
In what is already a massively troubled project, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE is now getting the word that it has been cut from a hard R to a PG-13 to compete in the same markets that DARK KNIGHT successfully competed in. The big difference being that DARK KNIGHT had a great script, director, and actors. PUNISHER does not. It had to rely on the heavy violence as a reason to even watch what will surely be a "terrible" film. Remember folks, there was a reason Thomas Jane dropped out of this.
Unbelievably, Mike Meyers has joined the cast of INGLORIOUS BASTARDS along with Simon Pegg, Brad Pitt, and Eli Roth. Tarantino knows how to direct seemingly weak actors (John Travolta anyone?) and make them seem beyond cool so this is probably a good thing.
Lucas talked about his work to convert the 6 Star Wars films to 3D and do yet another re-release as the last drops of blood are squeezed from the rotting carcus of this film version of a turnip. It looks like we are still a ways away due to some technical problems. Lucas said, "We worked on some, with a company that was developing the technology a few years ago to convert films into 3-D, we worked with them. But the system works great. It's just not very practical. What we've been working on since then is to develop a sort of practical way to do it. And we will get there. It's just a technological challenge."
Writer and sometime director, David Goyer (BLADE, BATMAN BEGINS) is working on a more true adaptation of H.G. Wells, THE INVISIBLE MAN. Goyer says "It's very steam punk...I took what being invisible could mean to the next logical extreme. We do a lot of crazy things in it that are sort of far beyond what anyone's done with it yet. It involves Scotland Yard getting their hands on the current Invisible Man and basically saying, 'Wow, you'd be a really good secret agent to send into Imperial Russia right now.'" I watched BLADE TRINITY again lately and that movie "sucks!" I thing Goyer is a very strong writer and has a catalog of work that he can really be proud of there but on the director side of things, it is MUCH weaker. Maybe THE UNBORN will be good.

The film Thomas Jane walked away from was a DIFFERENT film than you're going to see in December.
That story you cite never rang true to me. I believe THIS guy:
There is a rumor that has started circulating around this little thing called “the internet” that Lionsgate is pushing for the next installment of The Punisher to be rated PG-13. Given all we know of the franchise, this immediately smelled foul. Not being without charms and fully utilizing our ruggedly handsome looks, we tracked down our own source who is, of course, “close to the production.” Their word? *beep*
We could add some words in front of that, like “complete,” “total,” or “utter,” but it throws off the feng-shui of the post, but they would be appropriate. It looks like this originated over at Latino Review, who indicate that they have their own source. Now, I love those Latino Review guys, but I have no idea who they’re talking to. I do, however, definitely know our source and know that I trust them completely. Punisher: War Zone will be Rated R for Rambo-Levels of violence. Which is a good thing, because the kill count of Rambo (another Lionsgate release) was 236 and featured some of the best gore violence in years.
Now, while being Rated-R, the film is still facing a troubled production run, detailed by our Neil Miller at the end of last month. Who knows what else is going on in making the film “presentable,” though it probably has to do mostly with timing. While our source is more than enough for me, for you kids keeping count at home there are a few other things to keep in mind. First, former Marvel Entertainment CEO Avi Arad (and current Marvel producing partner) Avi Arad has always said that The Punisher was one character who would carry the R-Rating at Marvel (the other being Blade). Second, producer Gale Anne Hurd spoke at great length at Comic Con about the film and stressed the level of violence that would be in the film. Lastly, the exclusive footage shown at Comic Con, which was very well received, was definitely from a film that was Rated R, and it was the point they were selling - brutal.
In summation, this PG-13 rumor is total *beep* Punisher: War Zone is still not a ship sailing smoothly, but it will come to theaters with that Rated R stamp all over it on December 5. And just in case you need more evidence of the R-Ratedness, have a look at the clip below, which was launched a few weeks back at Comic-Con.

I found this post over on the RAW Entertainment message board. Oh was I THRILLED to see it. It's from Steve Gainer, cinematographer for Punisher: War Zone for those of you who don't know. This post is legit. I know it for a fact.
Holy smokes, I go away and shoot some kids stuff for Disney, and the whole world is a different color when I return. Again I appear here to dispel rumors. Please believe:
Lexi is not off the film
Lexi is still involved in the edit process
The film is not (nor could it ever be) PG-13
Today I saw a cut that ran 91 minutes
Lexi did in fact get married
Lexi is an incredibly talented director, and this film kicks major ass, as will be proven when it is released IN THEATRES DECEMBER 5th
The film is most certainly not all exploding heads, but will reveal a great deal of Franks personna and pain
This film has been difficult from the begining, from a bitter Canadian winter, to endless nights, to rampant sickness, Lexi has fought to make a killer Punisher film for fans and non fans alike.
Initially we were to release in September, but for whatever reason (not the quality of the film or edit IMHO) it was decided to release in December. That extra time has given everyone a chance to put their two cents worth in, but rest assured, Lexi is still stearing the boat, and she is a great captain.
When I hear vicious unfounded troll rumors like the "film was unwatchable" or "a total mess" it makes my blood boil. I want to punish the corrupt. People sit on their fat asses trolling the internet, people that have never even looked through a motion picture camera, and make judgements on a work of art that they've never seen, it's like saying a baby will be ugly before it is born, I can't freaking wait for this film to come out and prove the nay-sayers wrong.
Sorry for the rant, I just love something wonderful you have yet to see-

Hmmmm. This seems to be overly reaching to me. Why does it need so much defense? Can't it stand on it's own? I'll believe it when I see it. I'm highly skeptical.
If the new Punisher movie doesn't have a bunch of cars on fire that form the Punisher Skull when viewed from the sky, then it is a piece of shit and I'll wait to see it until it's on TNT in 6 months.
I never believe my contacts who's involved with a movie. When I talk with my contacts there movie is always the best thing since sliced bread. Then it either is a mediocre film, sometimes great or it just went to DVD. So be careful of "ASS"U"ME the greatness of a movie till you actually see it.
Uh, this is completely unrelated to those other comments, but if you haven't seen David S. Goyer's "The Invisible" yet, You should give it a viewing. One scene aside, it is a great teen drama with a supernatural twist. It may give you hope for his films beyond the incredibly fun, but uneven Blade III.
