Hellboy II: The Golden Army

3.5 Stars
When Guillermo Del Toro makes a movie, you pay attention to what he has to offer. Hellboy II is a ying-yang movie. The maximum creative juices that you see from his immense imagination, however the lack of a great script, really pulls you through a twist of emotion while watching Hellboy.
Maybe it was wrong to go with a lot of expectation to this movie. You see a title like “The Golden Army” I ASSumed that there would be some breach of war between the gools and the humans. When the movie started, I felt that it was going in that direction. The beginning drew my attention, and I was sold that this was going to exceed the first one. As the movie progressed, I felt like it lost its edge and it intensity of what “Red” is all about.
I felt the movie got soft with Hell Boy’s character. It felt like he is dispensable, and more human than not. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Characters in the movie, I love the chemistry, but the intensity that was in the first Hellboy, wasn’t there in the second.
When the story is basing that a golden army that is indestructible, and a prince who went into exile, and wanting his revenge after hundreds of years on humans, because we are destroying the planet, I expected more at the end than what we got. I mean what the hell were they thinking?
I am very upset on the ending, than disappointed. It could’ve been a lot more explosive, more aggressive, and written more epic. I won’t go into more about that, because I don’t want to give it away, though it felt predicable.
Now getting all that out, there were some great things about this movie as well. This was film art at its best. The beautiful imagery of the creatures didn’t hold back at all. It was great to see the creativeness of all the creatures, and imagination that went into creatures we have never seen before. Let’s just say I won’t think about tooth fairies the same again…in fact I love my teeth…
Like I said at the beginning, this is a ying yang movie. It has Beautiful directing, fun acting, but a lacking screenplay. If you asked me if you should see it, I would say yes, because overall, it was a fun movie to watch overall.
