Best Father and Son Movies - Mr. Moon
My love for the movies had come by my father, who taught me how to understand, enjoy, and yet respect movies. I want to present my top 5 best father and son movies of all time with a list with some honorable recommendations.
5. There will be blood
Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis) as a successful oil man never did business without his son HD, played by Dillon Freasier. There relationship is genuine, and HD wouldn’t do anything without his father, which explains at the end, how he had to make his son leave in with the truth, but the bite of bitterness to become successful with his new wife. It is unique relationship that you really see between the father and son that you will ever see on film.

4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
What can be better than Harrison Ford as Indy, and his dad played by Sean Connery! These two great actors have the same great compassion in great history artifacts and the Holy Grail. They conversed and even contended as father and son which is fun to watch. It is one of those movies were you watch and because of such great acting, that you see the similarities and the same quirkiness of a son and father throughout the whole movie. I love the fatherly lessons that even Indy had to learn, and see that Indy was still a boy at heart. With all the thrills, laughs, and tears, when you get to the ending, you feel the love and bond between a father and son regardless on the age of the son or the father.

3. Lion King
A Disney instant classic of which King Mufassa who rules the animal kingdom and the movie begins of the birth of his son Simba. The Kings son is the rebellious prideful lion pup who just gets into trouble. However, his father, the King shows ultimate love to his son, who even makes some selfish mistakes; his father forgave him, and continued to teach him to become a King. After costing his fathers life, in a trap that was done by the King’s brother Scar, and Simba believed it was his fault and ran away from his kingdom, and from his troubles. However, he was reassured from seeing his father again from the Heavens, more humbled and listened to his fathers council and to take his fathers place in the animal kingdom as King.

2. Godfather
What a better relationship of father and son between of Vito Corlione (Marlon Brando) showing his son Michael (Al Pacino). Michael who doesn’t want to be apart of the family business, however truly loves his father for who he is, and not for his power as the head of the family. Through the family wars, Michael realizes the importance of his father’s position and role after refusing not to sell drugs or get into that filthy business. Michael truly finds love for his father, and knew he was the only one to continue the Family business (especially because Sonny got wacked). Michael put his own life on the line especially to hide his father when in he was being hunted. He showed revenge for his father and what he stood for. He became his father. What is interesting was that Vito never wanted Michael to become part of the family business, When Michael took care of the guys who killed Sonny, Vito knew that Michael was it. Some random lines in the movie that I love:” A man who isn’t a family man isn’t a real man.” Or the famous line during dinner “We don’t talk business at the table.” I think that is why it is such a great movie and heavily quoted movie because of the great relationship between the father and the son.

And the # 1
Field of Dreams
When I asked some of my respected movie critics and colleges, the movie everyone was mutual for the best father & son movie is Field of Dreams. I couldn’t agree more. This movie shows the inner pain and inter conscience piece within between Ray and his deceased father. He was instructed to build a baseball field in his corn field (his main source of income) were the voice that says “If you build it, he will come.” He is criticized and threatened to close his farm due to the lack of money to pay the mortgage due to the lack of corn he will be able to produce with a beautiful baseball field he had built. He follows the voices, finds other who also who wanted to fulfill there dreams on there way. What a more appropriate film that shines to show our love to our father. It expresses how we always have those differences between love and redemption. Some times we think that it is too late to say we love someone, and this movie definitely shows that it is never too late.

Honorable Mentions
Amadeus – Just watch how Amadeus Mozart (Tom Holts) was so inferior to his father, though such a great composer. It shows how all influential people in this world are just human and have there own personal demons. This is truly a great film, and yet how much Mozart did fear for his fathers approval.
Back of the Future part 1 – What I love about this movie is that through a pure accident of going back in time, it was a coincidence that he lived the time were his parents were suppose to meet, and he screws it up. He coaches his father to overcome his fears and overcome his bully in life, Biff Tannen. Robert Zemekis did a great job directing this film. It is one of my favorites to watch, especially on how the different ways Marty (Michael J. Fox) had to get his father played by Crispin Glover to hook back up with his mother who became infatuated with Marty.
Last of the Mohicans – Even though this movie is one of Michael Mann’s less notable movies directed, this movie still shows the great bond between Daniel Day Lewis character as an adopted son who becomes part of the few remaining tribe of the Mohicans. The chemistry between the father and his two sons is best I have seen on the silver screen. I love watching them work together, and just look at each other, and you knew what they were saying.

Star Wars Episode 6- It was episode 5, when Luke just found out that Darth Vader was Anakin, his father. Of course the devastation of your “father” trying to kill you and then “Oh by the way” lets you know. In most cases, that is when fathers deny our membership in the family, and call us a bastard child, not in this case. So we get to Episode 6, were Luke feels that his father still has good in him, and are on the mission to change his father to the good side again. The sacrifice of Anakin’s son (AKA Darth), Luke to confront his father and the principle influence of father the Emperor that persuaded Anakin to the dark side, and was persistent to even torture to bring out the understanding from Anakin, that he was wrong going to the dark side, and reunited with his son in repentance.
Finding Nemo- When Nemo wanders off and is captured as a fish in a tank, and the father who had lost his wife and children except Nemo, overcoming his adversity and fears, to get to Australia to find his son, and bring him home. A great one Disney/Pixar movie to watch with the whole family!
Bronx Tale – This was one of Robert Deniro’s great acting movies and he wasn’t a mobster! He plays a father who is a straight ace bus driver and try’s to teach his son that the answer is not to follow the mob or the easy way out. His son Calogero Anello, played by Lillo Brancato, has to choose between Sonny who treated him as a son on the streets, but DeNiro never ceases to love and never gives us on his son. It is one of those father and son movies, were it reminds you that no matter how much you screw up, and no matter how much you disagree on your father’s beliefs, that he will always be there.
There are many great films that could’ve made this list. If you have any that stand out, go ahead and let me know!
